Remembering Dante

I had always wanted a Doberman. My Grandpa had a red one when I was little named Bones. He was beautiful, protective and loyal.

One day in early 2011, I turned to the newspaper classifieds to find an ad for Doberman puppies. I had always assumed the dogs were insanely expensive, but these puppies were affordable. I was skeptical, thinking it could be a puppy mill situation, but my husband and I decided to check it out anyway.

It definitely wasn’t a puppy mill and we were soon covered in kisses from the puppies remaining from the litter. But there was one, sitting off by himself, calm and observant. James scooped him up and Dante came home with us that day.

For 14 wonderful years Dante was our constant companion. He helped me raise my wonderful kiddo, watching him grow into a full fledged adult. He stood by my side through college and James’ grueling journey to become a doctor. Always there, happy to be the most loving and sweet boy.

The most gentle giant, Dante brought so much joy to so many, even changing the hearts and minds of people who had deep fears of big dogs. He visited nursing homes, loving on the residents, loving on everyone. If you entered the house, you were loved and you were family and he made sure you knew it.

I have never known a more faithful friend. Dante was loyal and perfect in every way. He was simply the very best.

There are a million more I could share, but here are just a few of my favorite photos of my best friend Dante. He is so deeply missed.
